ok, so i decide to go to the mainland.... leave the town, hoping to do some serious harvesting/foraging... my current level is 27... is that low? i suspect it is.. from the poor results i`m getting.. or total lack of results...

i`ve been all over the place, not found a thing.. occasionally i`ll get the message: "You could detect the presence of raw materials, but they were too hard to find using your current prospecting action" ... ooh close but not close enough  Maybe i am just too low level, i`ve tried concocting all different kinds of actions, but nothing seems to work...

Ive been killed by so many mobs (by trying to find that special spot), that its taking me longer to get rid of my death penalty points than it is to progress in the game.

any tips welcome...

Seether.

You need to upgrade your prospecting action to pick up materials of a higher quality. Buy the skills 'Prospection for <fine/choice etc.> materials', include them in your prospecting skill and try those spots again. The results should be a little more favourable.

You need to prospect that spot with Find Better Materials stanza. If you have, for example, stanza for choice quality implemented and it still says the same thing, you need to implement excellent quality stanza (and so on). You get these stanzas very early on.

In addition to the earlier replies, if you don't have the better mats stanzas (which you really need to get at the earliest opportunity if you don't), try foraging around the borders of your town.

There are still plenty of basic mats out there, so keep at it, you'll find them eventually. I've found basic mats way out in the middle of nowhere in pretty big quantities, scattered all over the map.

OK, thanks for the tips guys, i need to get more XP as i`ve spent all my points :( but i think i know what you mean,. Yes, i have missed out some skills and hopefully i can still buy them?
i have the `find better materials` stanza, so i might go for the `excellent` mats stanza. , and see how i go.

The game seems to have a high learning curve, especially when looking at all the harvesting/foraging stanzas and actions., i`ll keep plugging away at it, as i`m enjoying the game immensly :)

thanks again,
Seether

Good luck with your endeavours. As someone on these forums already said, the game has a somewhat steep learning curve, but it's well worth it. I couldn't agree more.

Oh and yes, you can still train them, even though you've missed them before. It's not a bad decision to get all of those "Find better material" stanzas, given the situation they all are handy to cut down on focus usage, if you know what quality you're digging up that is.

If your skill points are limited, i would only take up to the "choice" stanza. The excellent and supreme materials, certainly on the mainland at least, are only found in "timed" and/or "weather condition" sources. By this i mean the sources are not always available, even if you have the correct actions to find them. Choice mats are always available however.

Well, I had plenty of choice quality harvest spots during the last ob that were most definitely daytime dependent. However, what they had in common was that there were also excellent qualities around that spot, but the spots were mainly all about choice really (if you consider the acreage).

So if excellent qualities, and higher, are dependent on the daytime/weather/season, every choice spot around them are too. (I'm led to believe that is, previously I just thought that choice can be dependent on times too)

Hmm, ive never found any choice spots that were time dependant. They have always been available regardless of time of day etc. Are you sure that it wasnt just that the area had depleted and you had to wait for the mat source supply to "regen" again ?

I'm more than sure. Couple of my favourite choice spots actually got wiped of from my harvesting routes because they couldn't be accessed due to the season at that time. I do, believe or not, know the difference between the messages that the souce isn't available at the moment and that it has been depleted ;)

Funny thing, really, that the common factor was that they had excellent spots nearby. The pure choice spots, or more like areas, that I had were accessible regardless of the daytime or season, like you said that they are.

I can confirm this, too. My oath bark spots in witherings (1 choice and 1 choice/excellent) vanished with spring.

I am harvesting in prime roots only now, though (at least until they balance this totally overpowered harvesting area), which isn't effected at all by seasons and weather.

But daytime does matter, right? Last time I was there I had nothing but "not at the moment" messages pouring in.

To the original poster, if you haven't seen it already check out DoubleTap's excellent 5 part harvesting guide here:

Haven't noticed any effects there. My sources were always there when I tried to forage them. Besides, there is no day/night cycle in roots - it's always dark there.
There one funny thing, though: In they ceiling of the root areas there are a few holes where you can see sunlight shining in. But there is *always* sunlight shining in, even if you go into the roots when it's dark outside.

Something that has changed during the launch, I assume. Because the only spot I could find there was that crappy smart shell deposit. Everything else was "not at the moment".. and if I found something, it was non-craftable.
