Cutting straight to the point, Im incredibly lost. I just deleted my first Zorai character, after realizing that my average skill level of 10 just wouldn't cut it on the mainland. If someone knows of a general newbie guide, I sure would appreciate a link. Otherwise, I cordually invite anyone to help me out.
1) At what point, skill progression wise, should I leave the newb island?
2) Is it worth it to purchase weapons/armor on the newb island?
3) Is there any point in specializing in certain skills (fighting/magic/harvesting/crafting) or skill subsets?
4) The harvesting meters are pretty darned cryptic. If someone could give me a quick rundown of how those meters work, it would be most appreciated.
5) Do stats like Strength carry over into other skills, or are they skill (in this case, fighting) specific?
Thank you in advance.

1) General consensus is at least 20 in all skills you are wanting to use.
2) If you're not making your own then there's no reason not to buy gear made by other players. I wouldn't buy the NPC stuff, but that's a personal choice, player made is best.
3) The beauty (and main points) of Ryzom is you can do what you want. You can specialise or you can do all the skills. It is entirely your choice what you do. No real advantage to doing, or not doing any skill.
4) I 'll leave this to someone who digs. :)
5) They're skill specific - strenght and stamina for melee, sap for magic, focus for crafting and harvesting.

generally people say lv20 in fight or magic, i would say when u feel comfortable with ur surroundings, know how to hit things, level up, etc.. there is no real advantage staying on the island as far as leveling is concerned - there are suckling yubo's and meks right outside zora on the mainland. A good reason to stay would be if u've made some friends there.. then u come over at the same time and u'll have people to explore and team with right from the beginning ;)
Is it worth it to purchase weapons/armor on the newb island?
yeah, but dont spend too much time worrying about the stats (although my alt makes some wicked pikes and heavy armor for the zorai island (SmithOfAris) :D
your other question's need slightly longer answers.. dont have time at the moment (pesky job) but sure lots of others will answer soon enough :)

Hello :) sorry to hear you deleted you 1st charachter as im sure people wouldve helped you played the game on mainland.
1:generally level 21 is about right to go to mainland, be it all skills (forage, magic, melee, craft) or just one of the combat skills.
2:its worth it to buy a weapon on starter isle to quickly level your combat skills, you can aslo choose to get that on mainland or craft it yourself, which is fun :)
3:you can take all skills and be everythng at once without being less good at it as a person just " specializing" in melee fight and being a 250 swordsman. the skills level seperatly and there are no penalties to doing all of th skills
4: basic skills you need to get foraging started- basic extraction, basic prospection, accelerated prospection 1 and 2 (to make dropping a source go faster) gentle extraction 10 and harmfull 20 and then gentle 20 (try to use the gentle extractions as the source will react better to it) careplans like ground stability and sourcelife ( to stop explosions or source running out of life) prospect for fine and lower, choice and lower. That should e about all you need to get foraging started and always but the new focus upgrades (will end dex) as soon as you can.
5: strenth and constitution are fight skill absed but alround effect is giving you more hitpoints and faster regeneration of that, stam is for fight actions only and ranged combat, sap is used for magic and enchantments, focus is for foraging actions and crafting bosted items.
i think at the bottom of the forum listings theres a newbie guid aswell :)

4) The harvesting meters are pretty darned cryptic. If someone could give me a quick rundown of how those meters work, it would be most appreciated.
I'll give this one a go.
- The white bar with the timer is how long you have till the node dissapear. This is call the source time. You can increase this at you gain more level and also by getting an extend source time stanza. This goes down at a constant rate from the time you start digging the node.
- The blue bar is how much mats are left in the node you're digging.
- The red bar with the heart symbol (source health?) is the health of the source. If this goes down to 0 you'll lose the node even if you still have source time left. You can restore this line with the "resource preservation" care plan.
- The yellow bar with the bubbles is what I call the danger bar. If this goes down to 0 two thing will happened. The node will either explodes in your face or start leaking a dangerous gas, both of these will actually hurt you. The higher Q the node, the more dangerous the explosion and gas. You can restore this line with the "ground stability" care plan.
- The final orange bar is what we called the Kami bar. This is an area status, pertaining to a whole area instead of a single node. All players that dig in that area affect this bar. It represents the Kami tolerant of the resources being stripped from that area. The more you dig out of the area, and also depending on how agressive you are when digging (i.e. you are letting nodes explode, gas, go depleted, etc), the lower the kami bar will become. The poor sod who dig at a node with the kami bar near 0 will receive warning from the Kami, and if he pay no heeds, the Kami will come and zap you.
That's the basic gist of it. Hope that helps a little.

see this is what you should do
you should always have at least a duo, if you dont youll end up sitting around all the time trying to heal up, however you can circumvent this for the newbie levels in the following method
you can go to the mainland at level 1 if you want, there are plenty of suckling yubos and everythign the newbie island has, on the mainland, except for weeny and puny carnivores
my quick start solo method is to pick the full crafting pack, use the verstile anything mats, sell to make your first bit of earnings, about 16k. with that you can buy a good q20 weapon, preferably one over 70-80 max damage. Then go on a killing spree of sucking yubos and suckling messab/gnoof, whatever. Most things you should kill in one hit. After 5 levels go buy accurate attack 1 and increase damage 1/2 and put them in the same stanza, ask someone for help if you dont know how to edit stanzas
With this you will easily get to level 20 or so, soloing without worryign about getting hurt even. At this point you want to make friends and start joining groups and killing big bad things. once you have a group of friends you can get in to magic, but with todays resist rates you need a group to level magic until you are the uber level of 125.
harvesting is not in my scheme because it is not necessary unless you want to be a hermit, or you are supporting a guild, like in real life you only need to provide enough credit to society(for money) as for what you want (to buy things)
that is how you start this wonderful game quickly and smoothly

I agree with all of the above.
Except...
harvesting... is not necessary unless you want to be a hermit, or you are supporting a guild, like in real life you only need to provide enough credit to society(for money) as for what you want (to buy things)
I enjoy harvesting... its actually fun to search and find new mats that will help your crafting. Then exploring how to create cool items, with different specs... etc. etc. etc.... I for a long time was self-sufficient... i provided my own everything... until about lvl 100 ele, and i started buying...
(but maybe I'm a hermit??? .... who knows :))

1) At what point, skill progression wise, should I leave the newb island?
just to add...
die a lot in newbie island and enjoy doing it :-), i mean find all towns / mob locations / get to know mobs aggro range, run from town to town.
it help when you get to mainland. if you can avoid every mob there, sneak pass them, see them from far... then you ready for mainland.

2) Is it worth it to purchase weapons/armor on the newb island?
If you're going to stay and level melee for a few levels, buy the best weapon you can use. Player made is best, but the economy on the starter isles is pretty dead now days and there may not be anything available. The difference between the starter dagger and a NPC quality 10 weapon is huge.
I wouldn't bother with armor or an amp (unless a decent (choice) player made amp is available cheap). After buying a weapon or two, save your dappers for the better stuff available on the mainland.

I agree. Leave newbie Island as soon as y our comfortable with attacking/moving around/ quartering/ digging etc...
The benefits of mainland are you will have acess to much better equipment. Just dont wander too far into bigger agro mobs and stay close to towns with the little yubos running around. It is boring but at least you will be near lots of players till your stronger to join hunting parties.
