Hello Atys!
Its been a long journey from Tatooine, but I'm now happilly settling in on the Tryker Island. Two days in and I'm already loving the diversity of this game as dearly as I did Galaxies' before it was killed. Being able to compose my own template of skills and even my own Actions is a lot of fun, and not having patronising tutorials explaining it all to me gives a true sense of exploration.
I'm looking to go down the mixed combat/crafting path,with enough foraging skills to be self-sufficient in what I make. I'd also like to get involved with the community, find a guild and settle in. Any advice's gladly welcomed.
Seeya around =)

welcome Kemuel to your new home
Been looking at SWG a bit, must say its a shame about the whole NGE thing, but on the other hand nice to see some nice new tats (tattoine refugees :P) in atys. i understand you tattuinies are used to harvest for water, here on atys, we forrage more for specific materials to make great items or just sell for our currency, Dapper.
the main thing to remember is that we are a community, striving to survive against the ever threatening kitin, because of this, everyone must pull together, stand together at the hardest times and unite. for this reason, dont ever be affraid to send someone a /tell or ask in region chat a question that may seem simple.
there are quite a few SWG guys joining latly for obvious reasons.
if you wanna be a fighter, ask in region for team, if you wanna be a healer, again offer your services in region chat dont be afraid. if you wanna be a harvester/crafter look at the vendors in the city, find a good trader and send him/her a /tell. every time they will answer any questions or give advice.
theres a section on this website named "guilds" browse and read, even put in a request as to what you are looking for, we will suggest three or four guilds that will suit your needs/long term plans
you wont always be able to find teams due to population size, dont let this put you off, use this spare time to dig, the mats (materials) can be sold to the vendors for dappers, these can be used for tps (teleports).
in time when your guild feels you have sufficient levels, they will take you to new lands, this will increase your available gameplay fourfold
the most important thing is joining a good guild
have fun, "/tell scarazi" if you need anything
and welcome :)

Hey there,
I too am a SWG refugee and have been here since the 1st of Dec.
I played on Bloodfin with the ICE Dragons.
Me and a few of my fellow guildies came here and are having a hard time trying to get the rest of the guild to follow. Hopefully they will come along soon. We've been hooking up with Team Spirit there and have been learning the game as we go. Very fun, nice people and lots of exciting changes for the better coming along. Unlike the SWG changes... I think you will really enjoy yourself here.
If you need a hand look me up
My name is Oomo in game, also with me is Daylight, Bacca, and Faid. All from Bloodfin.

Have a little fun learning the basics and seeing who is about before diving into a guild. Read the lore and decide where you want to stand, if anywhere, in the faction/cult situation.
Your going to have to make some decisions that will affect your game and you'll be glad you did...

Thanks very much! Its great to hear Ryzom's reputation for great players isn't misplaced. Just browsing around the forums I'm amazed at how intelligent the discussion is, how few flames and counter flames and trolls and trollhunts there are. Its such a change from the Galactic Civil War raging in all aspects of Galaxies.
I was an Eclipse player there, a member of the town Mos Quito Hills. The city was the very first on Tatooine back in Beta (regardless of what Mos Kashyyyk say). 20 houses neatly organised in to two rows forming a high street, before the player cities officially were introduced. Wish I could have seen those days, but most of my Guildmates were two and a half year vets from back then. It was truly sad to go after filling the post of Mall Tailor for over a year, but the CU culled our ranks, and then the NGE all but finished us off. Hoping some of my friends will come to join me, but its wishful thinking.
Ryzom's handling of resources makes foraging and digging around a lot more interesting than following a percentile number to the highest concentration and dropping a harvester. Unearthing explosive/toxic gas while gathering moss seems a little OTT, but I sure as hell won't try leaving to get a drink mid gathering again ^^;
Once I find my feet outside the Tryker Island I'll start looking for a guild to join, don't be surprised if you get a /tell ingame from Kemuel looking for advice =)
Oh yeah, got a question concerning the factional standing. Is it possible for Jena's people to turn to the Kami side? The Tryker's ideology holds pretty true to mine, but I disagree with their belief in the Karavan and ultimately in Jena.
Thanks again for all the support!

Every Tryker can worship and/or follow whatever he likes; be it Jena, be it Ma-Duk, be it just paying lip-service to the powers.
If you work hard enough for it and set your mind on something, nothing is unatainable.
But seen how the Karavan' s belief has rooted itself strongly lately in the Lakelands, it surely won' t be easy to be a Tryker Kamist, but not impossible.

Hey Kemuel, very happy other SWG-ers enjoy Ryzom as much as I do. We moved here after the cataclysm with a good part of our guild. We're still learning and it's beautiful. Feel free to contact any of us if you need company. (most online Faa, Janann, Jaawa, Goupi, Criro, Rihek, Spangle... )

Hello fellow refugees, and all of Atys!
Yep, I'm here as a result of the NGE also - My main chars were/are on Intrepid. I haven't cancelled there just *yet*, but I feel it coming soon.
I'm just 27% through my Trial download, so I'm trying to do some reading while that's going on. I'm truely amazed and OMGosh am I relieved to see a forum with such friendly and *happy* people posting - it surely is a nice change!
I remember checking out this website back when Ryzom was in closed beta - I'm kicking myself for not coming here sooner to give it a try. I think it would have saved me a lot of heartache. Ah well...all things happen for a reason!
Good to see all you fellow refugees here - too bad it's under these circumstances though. Hope to see you soon in-game!

Jena is my friend :) Hehe
Anyway I left SWG a few months ago. I played Eve for about a month then quit that losing all hope of finding a good MMO to settle into. I played them all except Ultima Online. All I can say this game is the best MMO that I have ever played and I have found the best guild that I have ever been in :) There is no other game multiplayer or single player that has the depth and realism that this game has. When I say realism I am referring to the amazing game world that this game has. For instance how the seasons change every week or so. The ambient creatures and weather effects are a nice touch too.
As for advice I would suggest reading all the lore on main website and learning about the factions and whatnot. Its good to know what you want to be and do before joining a guild. I would advise against following the Kami they are evil :P hehe

another one here from SWG (man, we're like the nWo of mmo's aren't we, we're taking over lol j/k)
Looking forward to playing. It's downloading now. Just from the 10-15 mins of looking through the boards, I like what I see in the community. It's definatly not like the warzone of the SOE boards.
I am excited and can't wait for it to finish downloading/patching.

I am an SWG refugee, I could not tolerate the NGE, and SOE's incredibly abusive attitude towards its veteran players.
I am Robert Kruck, Senior Software Engineer at Motorola. I was one of the people interviewed in Seth Schiesel's NY Times article (Dec 10, 2005) on SWG, SOE, and the NGE fiasco.
I was in Flurry, my chars were: Amphiaraus, Polyphemos, Memnon, Nanonik, Naeblis, Votreka, Flyingpancake, and Spinosaurus. I was a rebel and used my 8 Flurry accounts to raise millions of creds for Rebel PvP/GCW guilds in Flurry.
My Ryzom chars (all on Arispotle server) are:
Matis Island: Amphiaraus, Boadicea
Tryker Island: Altaira
Zorai Island: Otho
Fyros Island: Morbius
Amphiaraus is my leading char, I would like to get him to at least level 20-40 each in Fight, Magic, Craft, Harvest before leaving the n00b island.
If you are an SWG refugee, the SWG refugee forum http://imperialcrackdown.com may be of interest. I am admin of the "Saga of Ryzom" section of the SWG refugee forum.
If you have URLs of Ryzom manuals and Ryzom info, please email them to ark014@yahoo.com
Are there guilds on the Ryzom n00b islands?
Thanks,

Another SWG refugee, here, and finding a skill-based system--let alone one not restricted to a pre-set amount of points--very nearly brought tears to my eyes.
I'm still in the process of downloading. I haven't got an in-game name or anything yet but there's a certain comfort level already finding so many SWGers here on the forums, and a complete absense of l33t kiddies /cheer
Lemme tell ya... I can't wait to harvest, dig, and get good and brain-fried learning the crafting system. And I'm sure I'll be the noob on the island asking everyone where I can find the nearest power hammer.
One question I do have atm is whether or not there's resource qualities, not just types. Anyone?

yeps, basic, fine, choice, excellent, supreme. On the starter islands only basic-choice are available, and for supreme you'll need to venture into the prime roots or smack some bosses around :)

Heya and welcome aboard refugee.
There is qualities alright in both harvestable and quarterable materials. Do however take note that there are 2 different kinds of quality.
The most important will probably be the skill level dependant item quality. Foraging quality 50 materials will only allow you to craft items with those up to an item quality of 50. That quality in return dictates at what skill-level said craft items are most efficient. Eitherway, these quality levels go up to quality 250 (ql250 abreviated in-game)
The second type of quality is what some call grade as well, and these would pretty much be comparable to the quality % of materials in SWG. You have 5 grades; basic, fine, choice, excellent, supreme; with basic being the lowest scraps and supreme the scarce 'wonder'.
These affect the amount of pre-craft values once combined in a plan. I doubt I need to explain that values quickly hit rock bottom with basic and skyrocket with supreme. ;)
General rule of thumb would be; the higher in both qualities, the higher the non-fixed stats on items.
Edit: beaten to it by a blue sneak; damn you Rushin!

Welcome to the tree-planet, Galaxies wanderer:)
What Rushin says it's true: there are the qualities of the mats: supreme>excellent>choice>fine>basic.
But besides of that, each mat has it's own characteristics that differs for the nuance of it you find. You can look for example at the healing/elemental speed in hash amber versus sha amber to see a comparison.
The stats of these materials vary greatly with their quality. So it's not always a mechancial relation. What I mean: it's not enough to use progressively the best quality of the material to have best results.
Add to this the looted mats, mainly those from named mobs.
As you can see in every crafted item you have a slot with a number of pieces of mat of the same cathegory. For example you have 20 pieces of magical focus in amps. This slot can be filled with same mat, let's say amber in our example. Or... not! Real experimentation comes when you combine in same slot different qualities and different mats.
Optimising one stat generally triggers lowering other stats though, so you have to take care of this fine balance.
And to make things even more complicated, sometimes using basic or fine mats instead of lowering final results just make them better.
Hope you'll get as fascinated as me:)
One thing though: do not expect mastering in Ryzom happen in an afternoon or even in a week. Don't even try if you don't want to get burnt. This game hasn't undergone the progressive "improvement" SWG has been through that made it 1. possible mastering everything in no time; 2. make the best crafted items be available for anyone (there are still things to discover in Ryzom, and this is good news for everybody who starts now); 3. make only objects created by masters be useful (you can make beautiful and useful things at level 30-50 as well, and have the satisfaction of seeing them actually used by real people).
Good luck and have fun, if you want to know us tell Faa, Goupi, Jaawa, Spangle in game. We're all SWG old timers.

Congratulations! You've already fried my brain with these answers. Sounds like a pretty steep learning curve, which is just the way I like it.
Now, if only I could get a grasp on the 'factions'. As a sworn rebel for life, I'm eyeing the Karavan with a certain level of suspicion ;)

I knew fried brain is what a real SWG dedicated crafter really wants:)
As for faction... just don't rush into anything. After 3 months of playing I think you have to consider:
- the story (which is huge, the world has a whole history to live in, and this history is not entirely written, you can still be a part of this history and make a difference);
- the friends you make (it's important to play with those you like);
- the game economy (not in what is sold over market, but which faction is the most numerous, which has most possessions, how, who is the underdog etc)
- practical advantages (check everything is told to you - it's a free world therfore a part of what is told to you is folklore);
- the politics (game mechanics make no guild alone be able to pursue its interests, therefore the network of relations, faction cross relations even, is of utterly importance;
- game mechanics (faction and pvp is probably the most complicated system here as compared to other MMOs I've been into. Let me give you just one example: as neutral you can do duels and fight at your will into the Outpost <sort of Bases from SWG but giving the owner great advantages> wars, so there is place for neutrals to have lots of pvp if they want to... this little thing alone make a world of difference);
- community psychology (people here had for a very long time no pvp at all. This makes the pvp perception very different from total rejection to bad ganking, from honourable approaches to dragging aggro over diggers, from friendly duels to huge battles).
Take it one at a step, and patience, young padawan :P

Personally, I feel that neutrals are the "underdogs"...though there are many definitions of neutrality, so it depends.
The reason I say this, is because both Kami and Karavan are mysterious to some extent - we don't know everything about them (and they only want us to know certain propagandized things about ourselves), and their motives are unclear (though their followers probably wouldn't agree with that statement, of course ;) ). They are also both "higher powers," equally capable of controlling teleportation and resurrection (which might suggest these abilities are powers of Atys, not exclusive to the cults - that we homins just haven't the magic/technology to control them...yet).
On a side note, neutrality can be challenging since we have no access to certain teleports - lvl200-250 regions and Prime Roots, as well as many others. We do have one teleport in most sub-200 non-Roots regions, though, and two in some. We also have very complex, interesting, and delicate politics, such as outposts and relations with Kamist and Karavaneer guilds.
Anyway, there are several similarities between the factions, despite their different ideals and bases. There are also similarities between their followers. The factions are religious cults, so most of the followers of either cult have some degree of "faith" and are willing to do almost anything their god/goddess (or the gods' servants/guardians, the Kami and Karavan, respectively) asks of them - including, obviously, killing other homins.
My main character, Jelathnia, for a contrasting example, is a neutral hominist and believes the cults are a dividing, harmful, and ultimately weakening influence on hominity, because lately the Kami and Karavan have pretty much ignored the kitin as they are obsessed with their war against each other. They seem to encourage their followers (pawns) to fight their war at all costs, and above all else.
Neutrals tend to be free thinkers, some with some degree of rebelliousness against the cults. So that is basically why I see neutrality as the "underdog faction," in a way.
In any case, have information, and choose the path which best suits your character. :) I apologise for any biased nature of this post.

I too am an SWG refugee. I have actually had my eye on Saga of Ryzom for some time. I was misinformed by someone who advised me against getting the game months ago. I used to play SWG as well (started at launch) and I cancelled my SOE pass and all five of the games that I played on it when they decided to destroy the game with the NGE. I thought "What the heck!" and decided to give it a try. So this Evening I finally started my 7 day trial acount and downloaded/installed. I am amazed at what I have seen so far! I have only tried a couple hours so far, but I am beyond pleased with I have already experienced. I really don't know what to say. I am stunned. I only wish I had tried it sooner. I still have one other MMO (WoW) and I am waiting for Huxley (for my MMO FPS tactical fix to replace Planetside), but I must say this is the greatest find I have happened upon in a long time!
