View Full Version : Armor Protection and Vs. %

I'm a little confused about armor protection and the max vs. percentages.
For example, the newbie armor that you start out with has 19% protection, and 0 on the slash/blunt/pierce percentages.
Someone in game told me that this means it protects 19% of 0....which makes no sense to me at all. If that is so, why not just put 0% and be done with it? Does that newbie vest do anything at all?
Can someone explain this to me in a way that makes sense (hopefully:)
Thanks!

Mmm let me try (and see if i am correct)
I always thought it showed the percentage of how much reduction in damage you get, and the number for slashing (and the rest) is the max possible damage it will take.
So for example a light armor can have 15% protection, and has a slashing max of 157 damage that it will absorb. So even if I am hit for 2000 damage, I will only absorb 157, instead of the 300 damage (which is the 15%).
But if I am hit for 100 damage, the armor absorbs 15 damage of the hit, leaving 85 to really hit me.
I hope that makes it a bit more clear (if I am right tho)

The protection % is the percentage of damage the armor might protect you from. The Max Vs values say the maximum damage of a certain type of attack that you will be protected from.

kaetemi, does that then mean that the newb armor actually doesn't protect against anything? Or just...other types of damgage that aren't slash/blunt/pierce? I'm trying to understand why it says 19%, and then 0 0 0, what that actually means.

I dont know for sure, but I think that is right, that the starter armor doesnt protect at all. (they are rags, you know.)

Ok if that is true....why does it say 19%? Just to confuse new players? lol

Probably because every armour has to have a protection %. Just because it doesn't really work doesn't mean that it can't have it.

Well then maybe it should be like 1%....at least that would convey that it doesn't do much of anything.
Oh well still doesn't make sense to me, but I appreciate all your answers.

aye, it seems to be there just to confuse
Or prehaps it was there so people asked about it so people understood how armor worked?

I guess it is just simpler to use the same rules for all armours, so starter armour has all the same stat categories as high quality racial armour.. the values, however, are so low as to make it only useful for modesty ;)
This means that even a starting crafter with his or her first pair of light boots, has made something of value.
The same principle holds true for all the starter equipment.. upgrade to player crafted first chance you get :)

it protects 19% of flee bites :) since they are soo small the don't do enough damage to regster as 1 damage so it is rounded down to 0 :p
also ever noticed that the noobie amps have 1k sap load lol just to taunt you!

The Ranger MA in noobville has 33% protection 64 max/slash iirc. So the armor does have slash protection et al.
