Its a simple question , how does one improve there defense as a caster specificly against melee & i dont mean armour or defensive spells i mean skills be hydra i.e warrior ect . I have started doing melee skills and i believe im lvl 25ish now but when i start catsting against a mob in close range my health goes down radicly but when im using a melee weap against the same mob its much slower so is it based on the action you are using or is there specific skills you can buy to upgrade ur defense and what is balance in the melee tree list i know what it says but what do those attributes do.

Ok i said a simple question and what i have written is not the best grammer but you get the jist i appreciate casters are not meant to be defensive warriors and they are ranged players but i only wish to know if im missing something i could be improving on in regards to it. Or if you dont understand a word i said which i do see as a possabilty could you direct me to a web site that has full list of skills and attribute info like ones you have on your identity window.

Appreciated in advance.

Are you using HP or Sap credits when you cast your spells?

And an other though it :

As a Fighter you can dodge the attacks of the mobs so you get hit less.
So that might be why your lossing more HP as a Caster since your not dodgeing :)
Try teaming and geting a Fighter to take the damage, also you shouldnt have as many Interruptions when your casting spells :)

Many thanks

You are right.

- when casting you get hit more often than in melee
- when casting you get hit harder than in melee

-> do not tank as mage. Spells have a range - use it.

What about when using ranged weapons (i.e., ranged fighting)? How does one's defense compare to a mage or a melee respectively here?

I find ranged combat def to be somewhat better than magic def, although not as good as melee def.

One other thought is that if you find a magic amp with a higher dodge capability you are probably a bit better off - a lot of crafters don't do much on the melee side for staffs since its only the magic focus side of the staff that affects your casting power.

When using Ranged combat (20m Ranged ?) I find that I am dodging as well as when using melee, however I am in combat with the mob ie not concentrating on casting a complex and draining Spell.

i apreciate what yall saying and it seems i didnt explain myself properly im aware of the obvious like i am a ranged fighter and not a melee which im sure i stated and yes of course i use it its kinda hard not to aye.

What im trying to say and forget about game play im talking about skills i can purchase from hydra classes like melee to boost my defense whilst casting and holding a mag amp for we all know we doing so you gona get ripped apart , and not all scenarios has you standing there shooting at max ranged does it , you can be running to meet someone b4 you know it a gingo chewing you a new *******.

Speaking of mage staffs (or whatever they are called - only just planning on starting a mage), when/if gloves are implemented as is indicated in the preview notes of patch 1 and 2, does this mean we will be able to wield a weapon (being able to actually use it effectively requires a decent combat level of course) and still get the bonuses the staff usually provide?

I like the idea of being a spellcaster, but running around with a puny wooden stick does not match up very well with my image of a big, scary warrior mage (yes, only in light armor). Even if I may stay out of melee 95% of the time, I would still like to run around with a huge sword - or at least a couple of daggers :).

Even if (which I strongly doubt) you still would get some action penality from the weapon which will reduce your magic effeciency,

To answer the original question - NO, there are no skills to improve defence, all such abiltiies are buried within the game system. In the beta there was a Defence Skill tree, but they got rid of it.

As a mage I tend to swap to Dodge, as a warrior I tend to parry.
