How to make friends and influence people

(This post is completely IC)

I find it interesting, especially in light of the recent information about the new alliance, that we – a neutral guild – are now being attacked, by a Karavan guild.

Why then attack a neutral guild who fight defensively within their alliance and who trades with all sides, bringing the bounty that their outpost has provided to homin of all stripes on Atys?

Our guild contains homin from all peoples and from many different points of view, yet we manage to live and work together in peace as one guild, one family. We achieve more by working together and understanding each other than we would in dividing ourselves from each other and warring upon former friends.

The alliance we are part of has Kami members, yes, but it could also have Karavan members. The beginnings of the alliance comes from those we have ‘grown up’ with, those we trust and those who share the vision that most of us have of a prosperous Atys, safe from the Kitin. If there are not yet any Karavan guilds amongst that number only because they have yet to express interest. I am sure the alliance would consider any guilds who share our vision of a defensive, peaceful alliance for inclusion in that alliance.

This action though, attacking a group who assists all sides seems contemptible and strange. Those who seek to attack us aggravate the Kami forces who do not wish the Karavan to have a foothold in their lands and they aggravate all those who still believe in peace, prosperity and neutrality of any type.

Perhaps we were considered to have no allies, no friends and yet that is not the case, because those other than our attackers see the value we bring in trade and in support when we are called.

Perhaps they are scared to take on the Kami forces directly and believe us to be a soft target?

Win or lose, we’ll still be here, but there may be some of you who will have to pay more for our help.

Wouldn’t you rather we traded with you and fought by your side?

Wouldn’t that make more sense?

OOC:Kos, I believe an alliance like you formed can possibly include Kami/neutral or Kara/Neutral... but no self respecting faction guild could join an alliance containing the other faction. In either case, as I stated before, I believe that alliances like this take much of the so-called neutral out of being neutral. Mainly because defending a faction is still fighting against the other side.

It isn't a popularity contest and trying to twist things to suit yourself is what got you into this situation in the first place. /OOC

Sleep with the enemy of you must, birds of a feather...

It would seem that some of the inhabitants of Atys belive that the choice to love all homins is mutually exclusive of the choice to choose a faction. This is clearly not true as can be attested by many a homin.

Making friends and influencing people? Where is that point in this letter I have received? It would seem that your beloved neutrality has been jaded by an impending attack by a guild whom follows the Karavan spoken word.

You speak of their reasoning, seemingly without even asking there reasoning. I would encourage you that diplomacy has not failed you yet, the stakes just appear a bit higher.

Clearly your neutrality is in question as you have stated yourself. We will see what comes of this all.

Noin.

Nothing makes sence anymore.
Not the Karavan, not the Kami, and 'neutrals' least of all.
I ask you, what is a 'neutral'? Not a Trytonist, not a hominist, not a Kami, not a Karavan, not a peacelover, not a warlover, basicly a neutral is nothing. And at the same time everything I just said. Simply put, as no two neutrals are alike, who can you find that has the same view as you?

Kami and Karavan will see mercenaries as a threat. They won't see benefits from a force they can hire, because the other side can do it just as good. More likely they will, no you're being attacked.. so they are thinking, this way we don't have the benefit, but the others don't either.

Does this mean you stand alone, the answer is ofcourse no, but you have to start making friends causiously, as those same friends can be the ones kicking your door down in the future.

You put yourself between the 2 sides, so you get the good, Homins from both side working with you, and the bad, Homins from both sides working against you.

I'd much rather see a Great Swarming of our own against the Kitin.

That is the knife's edge that the aethist or independent guild or individual homin* must walk. It's a tough existence but some on Atys may have the social skills and the connections to make it work.

*I'm really tired of the term "neutral" and would like to see it retired in favor of some more relevant terms. Call them rogue, unbeliever, independant, non faction, opportunist, free thinker... something besides "neutral"!

I can only hope that the friends I have around me are good. I must trust them, as much as they must trust me. And I do trust those who I call my friends.

Win or lose, they will still be my friends and good homins.
