Community-driven Ryzom as a last possibility

I know most of you will probably consider this a silly idea, but I wanted to check your opinions.
Since the recent updates on the Nevrax disbanding, what would you think if they made game's source code available to the community so it's development could be continued by the whole community?
I mean, this is a nearly impossible situation, but for sure you would like to see Ryzom stay up in any way.

Re: Community-driven Ryzom as a last possibility

I played a couple of games on private servers and they sucked so badly

But man the factionalism, politics, greed and aggravation were off the chart.

As a last resort, maybe, but only as a LAST resort, so I reckon we'll wait and see.

I didn't vote as none of the options truly reflect what I feel about private servers vs what I know of the Ryzom community.

Part of me wants to see it happen, but I figure it would tear the community apart. Its not like running a Community OP and even that has problems sometimes.

Sorry, damp squib post, I know, but I wanted to voice an opinon based on my experience.

EDIT FOR NON SPAMMAGE
Well the only reason I would bother is to keep in touch with friends here, but on saying that none of them are contemplating leaving Ryzom unless it shuts down, then most probably we will choose another game and decend on it, like the biblical plague of locusts we are

Re: Community-driven Ryzom as a last possibility

That's what I meant to say... consider this as a last ressort, since having small and less reliable servers to spawn is not a possibility any of us might really enjoy at all, but it would offer a great platform from with new projects might spawn..

Just consider Planeshift.. someone might actually end up setting up a good enough server, and if kept free, that would really allow for a wider, non restricted community

Edit (to answer next post without spamming too much): Yep, I know about NeL, and I think it's a great thing the engine is open-source, I really don't know about the legality of making the rest of the content free, but it's Nevrax property btw.

A part of it is open source already.
The game content is property of nevrax, not sure if they can release it since it is a asset.

Re: Community-driven Ryzom as a last possibility

I do not know about community-driven ryzom... as others said private servers is not really a very good idea - rather it will be an insult to what Nevrax created so far. But I would like Nevrax to outsource Ryzom at a lesser cost so that my cousin who very much loved Ryzom can organize a small professional team for which he may spend few millions and get ryzom to new heights while preserving the things the community loves. And at one time when Ryzom survives the danger line hand it back to nevrax to continue on as a team. He always tells me that, and if Nevrax was willing to corporate that would have been possible. Right now he is really disappointed. But what do I know? *^.^*

Anyhow I think there will be new owners and things will go alright, I guess we as the community are just worried & overreacting

Just too busy because of job and university :P Ask xeraphim for my msn id, so we can talk!

Returning the the thread.. Well, it wasn't what I really meant.. I think making it opensource if there isn't any chance to keep up a good, paid service, would make possible for a community to try to mantain a "decent" working server with or without sponsors... obviously not the good service we have now, but at least there would be hope for Ryzom.
On the other side, development would be left on the communities hands, which offers also a nice scenario of possibilities :P

I hope I've made it clear..

P.S: I repeat, this thread is just a poll on opinions.. since I think (hope/wish) we never get to the point no other company takes over Ryzom

Re: Community-driven Ryzom as a last possibility

I'm not even gonna vote :P ... Mainly cus it sounds good in theory, but it could get abused,And I don't think it would end well IMO... Im leaning more towards no tho, Because I personally would not play on a private server, Tho if it does shut down I want it playable single player on my comp :P rofl... Atleast I would have my char!
