I'm new to MORPGs, having been an avid D&D player and only a bit of Ultima Online. I've been playing Ryzom since Nov and EQ2 for the last couple of days. My first thoughts are:
Ryzom's flexible skill heirarchy (where you can be anything) is fantastic, but EQ's class specific skills are more numerous and interesting. I expect guild trainers will add to Ryzom later though. EQ's locked encounter mechanism means you can't interact with others as much as Ryzom and you feel like you are playing on your own with other characters just running around as extra scenery. Ryzom's small community has made it so friendly and interactive but EQ2 seems full of annoying show-offs and slang twonkers (whatver that means, case in point!). EQ2 is better with their quests and talking NPCs. You feel that there is meaning to the never ending onslaught of monster bashing. And I hate to say it but with my mega high end system their graphics and buildings are more intersting. Then again, I love the bleak desert of Fyros and hope when we build outposts that we get nice buildings and insides. I thought EQ2 would have their bugs ironed out, considering their budget and massive testing, but in my first 2 hours about 12 serves went down without warning and I bumped into various annoying and obvious mini-bugs. All in all it made Ryzom seem stable and comparative. To summarise: I have been playing Ryzom with itching feet for weeks anticipating EQ2 but now my feet feel happy being here in Atys. I've seen that the grass isn't greener on the other side of the hill; just a different shade of green. If I thought EQ2 was way better than Ryzom I wouldn't have bothered coming back to posting here. I don't expect many replies to this post, I just thought you would like to know that it aint so bad here. |

i played eq2 till i done my first class mission at lvl 9 for my priest then i quit after 7 days. I found it very linear and restrictive and the whole interface was just blugh. and yes teh bugs and downtime is just like anyother mmorpg and teh forums are like anyother mmorpg and the peeps are like any other mmorpg thats what makes sor different cause were quality peeps (cept for teh odd few that whine about a 2 hour server downt time once in a blue moon ).I play lineage 2 also and every day the server goes down for maintenaince sometimes its down for 5mins some times its down for 2hours. Today its been down 2 times for maintenaince >.< 1 was just over an hour the other 15 mins. But there is no complaints cause it all yanks who play and there all asleep when it goes down >.< just imagined if i screemed on forum lol |
