View Full Version : Well, I'm at it again :o) Operation: More US players!!

March 21st, 2005, 02:19 PM
Allo Allo Everyone,

I've had this idea for about 2 weeks now..and once again I couldn't sleep.
So, I decided to sit down and get busy with it, instead of it only being an idea sitting there and making no progress.

Ok, first off:

(((ANTI-FLAME))) I am not opening this post for flamers.
My idea here is to *help* players of Ryzom, not to dangle myself and my attempt to assist in front of you like a T-bone.

Ok, so - here we go.

Now, I know that this game is not based in the US, I'm aware of that.
But what are we? That's right, we're US citizens, which means we can only play on the US servers.
Now, I've heard this same situation a *million* times.
"There aren't enough US players"..."There's never enough people on."
"I can never find peole for groups...it wouldn't be like this if we could play on the other servers."

So I decided..."Why stop wishing for being on the other servers...why not help this one out instead?"

I know, to the advertisement team what I've done is nothing, but to me, I'm just worried about getting the word out - People here just aren't aware of the game and that's the main problem.

WE NEED THEM TO KNOW - this is the only way they'll be able to use the trial in the first place.
I found the trial by pure luck. Other than the ratings you find here and there, there are no advertisements for it - We need it!

So, I decided to do what I could on a whim.
I've been searching for the past 2 hours, looking for rating sites/forums and I've been putting up my feedback/ratings/reviews and encouragements.

I think everyone that has a few spare minutes, boredom, anything should try to do this as well - if not post your own stuff, give your feedback to mine.
I've decided to dedicate a little time aside for this.

I'll call it "Player Advertisement".

Below are links and brief descriptions of the sites I've already hit.
****Please post more if you find them, I really want to get Ryzom out there, when it's known I believe it will be at the top of the lists****
Also, keep in mind that almost all of the sites I list do require that you sign up to post/review or vote. This takes about 30 seconds. Spend it well and make your opinions and votes count!!!

Every time I walk past an Electronics Boutique (or other gaming store) I stop in... specifically to check to see if they are even carrying SoR on their shelves and I'm sorry to say 9 times out of 10 it's a "no." From the server population I'm sure we can deduce that this game isn't flying off the shelves and I've just happened to walk in every time they've sold out... for the last 5 months. While I completly agree that we need more people on server, I don't see how we (SoR = we) are supposed to compete with WoW, EQ2, etc. if the game isn't even available for sale on the same shelves.
Just a thought...

March 22nd, 2005, 01:24 AM
That's true, it's *not* on the shelves.
I have not seen it once, so, this is why I thought that suggesting the game on these sites would get more attention.
People shopping around in the stores aren't going to see this at all.
However, the players, like myself, that have been playing for so many years, we tend to research first.
We go out and look at the rankings, screenshots, etc. of the game before we do anything else.
In this case, you get the Ryzom free trail...they don't need to buy the box set then.
So, we just need to get the word out there IMO and let them know that while this may not be on the shelves, you get one of the longest trials out there for the best game out there.

I'm hoping my little attempts will at least assist in this.

Now, if anyone has suggestions for additional methods, I'm all open for it.

(I just woke up btw, so if this is a lilttle gumbled, I apologize, lol - I'll clean it up later.)

Well, I just hopped over to MMORPG.com and come to find out that SoR is ranked #15 currently. I was thinking if everyone that was playing currently posted a review, and honest review, that we would probably push up to #10 pretty easily and be on the main page. That would help dramatcally with people even being epxposed to our game.

Being that we are currently ranked at 7.4, and there are 14 games ranked either 7.5 or 7.4 and only 3 above that. I think it would be very easy to see Saga of Ryzom listed in the Top 10.

Please do your part and support your game, It will be better for all of us

I know it would also be helpful if the SoR marketing staff could step it up a little bit with press releases or something to get the word out there a bit more. Maybe some interviews or something to pump everyone up.

March 23rd, 2005, 10:29 PM
It might be wise to wait till Outposts are released before firing of this champaign of your, tyger >.<

March 23rd, 2005, 10:35 PM
I, for one, am not really that excited about them.
I mean it's great, blah blah - but I love the way the game is now.
I'm actually worried that would make it more difficult for those of us that are in PR 24/7.
But, I won't know that until it happens ;)

I also figure why not go ahead and work on the rankings out there?
If it's great now and it improves with the outposts, then rock on - that just means that maybe even more people will actually take the time and effort to rank it and pull more attention to it.

March 24th, 2005, 04:36 AM

I, like most others, am aware of the lack of players in Windermeer. I thought about it, but I never really thought I could do anything to help. Thanks soo much for the ideas--I just went to MMORPG.com, made an account, and posted something in the forum. I'd really like to help with this in any way I possibly can.
This is mostly becuase when I'm around in Farihaven, buying a new pick or whatever, I usually type in /who and 10 or 11 people pop up on the system info window. 5 of them are guildies. Another 5 are people I see every day, walkin around doin whatever. 1 is someone who is most likely an 11 year old on the trial who doesnt have a credit card and will not continue with the game, even though he likes it a lot.

So, in the meantime, let's do what we can, Homins ;)

March 24th, 2005, 07:49 AM

That's what I'm talking about!

About once a week I'm going to check all the sites I've visted and I'm going to try to add more to the list.
If you see any more out there, let me know and I'll add them to the list for easier access :)

March 24th, 2005, 11:26 PM
Somewhere on this forum I read a post regarding having an experienced player sit on noob island for a few hours once a week or so just to inform the newer players of what to expect on the mainland... answering interface questions and whatnot.

This I think is an amazing idea... 100% great. To make it as useful to the noob players as possible though... I feel it would be necessary to have those cool yellow remarks from the devs / GMs pop up for the players on each noob island with which times to log in under the expectation of help.

For example.... if 5 people sign up for Zorai noob help (5 people would constitute about 40% of all zorai... but we'll ignore that) space that out over 5 days... and have it announced so the noobie players will actually FEEL like they belong.... feel like people are going out of their way to help them become part of the community. It's not too much to accomplish... and i'd be more than willing to be a noob-guide .... but we'd need the help of the developers and GMs to make this truly effectual.

Just my thoughts,

March 24th, 2005, 11:32 PM
That's definatelly a good idea, I believe anything that helps the newbs is great!
This way they can actually enjoy the game and adjust much faster.

When I started, I first played a Tryker.
There was a player there that kept a toon in the newb isle, helping everyone he could.
I couldn't understand at the time why he was doing it, but I am truly greatful that he did.
If he hadn't, I'm not sure I would've adjusted so quickly and I wouldn't be doing half the things I am.

I have a lot going on in game atm, but I certainly think I'd be willing to help with just Noobie guiding if it doesn't actually develope into something the devs and GMs can change.

I really do think we're going to have to rely on ourselves for this - the GMs and devs are busy enough, I'm sure, and we certainly don't have the advertisement.

This is why I'm trying to grab the bull by the horns, so to speak and trying to come up with ideas that we can do as players.
We'll have to be creative and rely on our own resources.

I love that so many people are willing to contribute!
Hats off to you all, I'm very pleased.

I do love the idea, we're just going to have to work from the ground up on it, I think, unless the GMs are truly inspired by it and decide to help us out ;)
Which I would absolutely love.

OK - I was able to finally get ranking 5/100 (which is needed to post a rating and review) on www.MMORPG.com (http://www.MMORPG.com)
I just noticed something.
Ryzom is currently listed at 7.4 on their game list.
Most of the Highly Recommended MMORPGs listed on the main page are 7.5!!!
Get in there!!

All you have to do to be able to review Ryzom is get a ranking of 5/100.
Wanna know how easy that is? Just log in for 5 days.
Every day you log in, your ranking goes up.

This is sooo easy and a good way to get The Saga seen!
Chip in and log in!

March 25th, 2005, 04:42 PM
Actually, for MMORPG.com, you can get that ranking status quicker. After creating my accout, I went straight to writing up a nice hearty post and throwing it in the SoR forum. Then, I logged on the next day and was able to rate games :) . So, it is my theory that a good post will score you 3 additional ranking points.

March 25th, 2005, 04:44 PM
Rock on!! That'll help a ton, I wasn't aware of that.

Good Show! *cheers*

You simply rawk, mah dear :)

March 25th, 2005, 05:03 PM
Actually, I just checked my profile. After 2 posts I have 31/100 ranking points. (Go figure) :)

March 25th, 2005, 05:05 PM
Holy goodness, lol, very nice!

March 26th, 2005, 11:25 AM
There was a player there that kept a toon in the newb isle, helping everyone he could. I couldn't understand at the time why he was doing it, but I am truly greatful that he did.

When I started there was at least one experienced player on the Fyros island. (Fyros is so darned popular) They were a great help, even though they couldn't answer some of our forage skill tree questions. When I restarted, and was on the Matis island, I was startled to find that I was the more experienced player. I had thought that seeding veterans on the islands was a standard practice. Since I am a 'casual' player, I could not help as much as I might like.

Someone recently suggested volunteer helpers in the starting continent cities, but I think island volunteers are much more to the point, and should be applied with a mind to the best coverage possible time-wise.

I know you guys mean well, but I strongly disagree with what you are doing.

This course of action is effectively spamming game reveiw sites with very colored and subjective 'reviews' just because you want more people to hunt with/buy your mats/pvp fight......
I won't pretend that people playing the other MMORPGs aren't doing the same thing; they probably are.

I disagree because the reveiwers gave Ryzom that ranking for a reason. The same reason why Helper Homins on the islands are a good idea.

Ryzom simply has a steep learning curve for new players.
[Also they continue to gradually roll out content while the others went live with 90% of content in place. Also they tended to be dissatisfied with the mission system etc... etc... etc... I read them before I started Ryzom, and I found the reveiws to be mostly accurate]

The best way for you guys to use this enthusiam is to concentrate on the concept of Island Helpers. (co-ordinating with the city-helper people would be best)

Its the best way because when people (kids) suddenly see that Ryzom is miraculously rated higher than WoW, guess what's going to happen? They start out on an island, have problems with the interface, have problems with the skill tree, have problems with the beastie difficulty, get frustrated and quit.

March 26th, 2005, 01:54 PM
I both agree and disagree with what you said.

You see, here's the tactic. We spam the forum sites and such with semi-honest reviews, and poeple will try the trial. When I first started the game, one of the only reasons I continued playing was because of 4 guys who I met on noob isle. They were really nice and helpful. This is where the volunteer work comes in. If someone trys the trial and never meets a helpful person, they won't have much incentive to continue playing. But, what would be the point of having volunteers and then no new trialers?

You *plural* may think that the idea of bringing more people to Ryzom will add problems, such as unwanted PvP or a more annoying and mean community. I don't think that would happen. You see, the uniqe thing about Ryzom is that it isn't perfect. Far from it, in fact. Beacuase of this, all the whiners and complainers and the people who won't put effort in will be filtered out. Except Raynes ;) .

In conclusion, I think that the site spamming is a nessecary part of the recruiting process.

Also, I volunteer to be a Matis guide, seeing as Matis is the most popular race. (all the noobs go for the most human-like :D )

March 26th, 2005, 02:48 PM
I for one am posting an honest review from my point of view, the first time mmorpg player. I will have you know that mmorpg rated us 7.0, and that when I looked the other day, and the user rating was 7.4 (before we did anything) there were 16 games rated ahead of us.

WoW was 8.7
EVE at 7.7
City of Heroes at 7.7
and the rest were 7.5 except for the 3 diretly ahead of us that were 7.4 also.

I am asking for you to voice your 'Honest' opinion and speak of what you think of the game in your text. My opinion differs greatly from others. But honest reviews will move our game up. Some poeple are here that are not happy, and I welcome them to voice their opinion too. I do believe our game is better than many of the others due to some reasons, and not better for other reasons.

March 26th, 2005, 07:54 PM
Hey All,

First off - I was not dishonest in my reviews.
You may not all know me very well, but those who do know me are aware that I am *very* enthusiastic.
Especially when it comes to Ryzom.

To douph:

Other players of other games submit their reviews and opinions, why shouldn't we be allowed to share ours?
I have not lied in my reviews, just like you didn't lie in your post.
You gave your opinion, I respect that, even though I may not agree with the entire post.
Those are your views.

And to clarify - I do not want more people in the game to group with, to buy my mats, etc.
FYI - I'm usually on my own if I'm not helping someone.
I *want* for other players to be aware of this game.
I want them to know that it's available and to see what it has to offer.
If they don't even know it exists, how can they?
This is my effort and I stand by it.

I honestly believe that if more signs of life out there for SoR, our numbers will greatly increase.
This would mean, even more help, more events, more roleplaying, more things that everyone is wanting to see in the game.
It will not add more content from the devs, etc. etc.
I'm trying to find ways to improve it w/o being one of the people that turns and points the finger at the GMs/Devs.
I want to see a player movement that will help.

I'm not fully awake yet, so I apologize if this is a bit of a ramble ;)
Hope you all have a great day!

March 28th, 2005, 01:50 AM
Dude, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you forget WWW.MMORPG.COM? (which is the main site to hit, in my opinion)

March 28th, 2005, 01:54 AM
Noppers hun, that's one of the first ones on the list :)
And one of the main ones we've been talking about, hehe.

Danke tho - if you find any others, let me know!

March 29th, 2005, 03:44 PM
I tried staying away from this thread because I didn't really agree with it. The game in it's current state, in my humble opinion, isn't something to go and try to grab the masses with. You could be doing more harm than good if a large volume of people suddenly started playing it on your recomendation and then find that there isn't much meat on this stick...

Sorry I get long winded :x.

The point of this post is to point you to another one at mmorpg.com :

The player there, Neas, is exactly the type of people you need to convince. She/he is a former player who left the game and found that another one was 10x better. The original review in that post and her follow up cover a lot of good points. Ryzom isn't perfect, no game is; but it has a lot to answer for...

Outposts are maybe something to grab the general public. Maybe.

I look forward to your replies in that thread :P
