I've tried adjusting both map settings in the default config, but upon opening Ryzom, they are set back to 2 and 8 and the app has to relaunch.

modifications go to client.cfg

ok, there was no MaxMapScale=2.0; in my normal config file. I will try adding it with a higher number.

Ok, that worked. Needed to raise the number higher than I thought, maybe I will use 6, 9 seems excessive...
